Baby Lock History
Baby Lock were the creators of the domestic overlocker
back in 1963 and continue to lead the market with innovative products. Read on
for a detailed history of the Baby Lock company.
Baby Lock was born as a
result of an idea by a team of engineers and middle management, employed by
Tokyo Juki Industrial Company. This group believed they could redesign the
industrial overlocker to be smaller and lighter for use by the home sewer. They
saw that a factory could produce a garment in minutes with the use of an
industrial overlocker, while producing the same garment using a domestic sewing
machine would take hours.
They presented their idea to management, who
did not accept their idea as valid. This group was so committed to their concept
that they quit their jobs and formed a new company to design and build their
dream machine. This was the birth of a company called Juki Co. LTD, and a brand
name known as Baby Lock, the "baby" of the industrial overlocker.
In 1963
the first working prototype unit was designed but not produced. It was in the
following year, 1964 Baby Lock model MS 1 was produced and released on the
domestic market. Still led by several of the original founders Baby Lock has
continued to be the leading innovator in the domestic overlocker market.
Although several other manufacturers ironically enough including Tokyo Juki
Industrial, have entered the overlocker market, none of these companies have the
experience of Baby Lock engineers.
These engineers have been responsible
for the invention and design of features such as Award winning Jet Air Threading
system, Automatic Thread Delivery unit, dial in narrow rolled hemming, and a
stitch quality that no other overlocker can match. Baby Lock are renowned as
world leaders in design, technology and quality in the overlocker industry.
