Cheater's Angle BlockThe Cheater's Angle block is a great way to make a pillow or a fast and simple quilt. On our sample, a square piece of fabric was appliqued with a Satin stitch and embellished along the edge with a decorative stitch. If you have a Janome embroidery machine, you could also add a simple embroidery design in the centre of your square.

- Cut a 4 1/2" square from a piece of fabric.
Note: 4 1/2" is the size of a square selected for our sample, however the Cheater's Angle Block will work with any size square you desire.
- Select four fabrics that coordinate with your block and a fifth fabric for a sash.
- Cut one 2 1/2" x 6 1/2" strip from each of the four block fabrics.
Note: The length of each strip needs to be 2" longer than the length of the centre block.
- To frame the block, lay a strip along one side of the block, right sides together with the top and right edges even.
- Stitch the upper half of the seam with a 1/4" seam allowance, leaving the lower half free.
- Press the seam allowance toward the strip.
- Turn the block one-quarter turn clockwise.
- Place another 21/2" x 6 1/2" strip along the edge, right sides together. Sew as before.
- Press the seam allowance toward the strip.
- Repeat for the third and fourth strip.
- Fold the first strip over the block and stitch the remainder of the strip.
- Position one long edge of a quilters square ruler on the raw edges of two seam lines of the block frame. Trim the block at an angle.
- Turn the block a quarter turn to the left and trim.
- Repeat and trim the remaining sides.
- To frame the block cut two 1 1/2" x 6 1/2" strips and two 1 1/2" x 8 1/2" strips.
- Set two strips to the sides and two strips to the top and bottom.
- Layer the block with batting and a backing fabric.
- Quilt with traditional quilt stitches or experiment with decorative stitches from your machine.
